Born in Paris, France, in 1925, François Brochet (1925–2001) was the son of painter and dramatist Henri Brochet. He received family training in dance, theater, and puppetry. In 1941, he began an apprenticeship with sacred art sculptor Fernand Py, learning direct wood carving and polychromy. This education reinforced his desire to maintain traditional craftsmanship, particularly direct carving.
